The New School will close campus and cancel all classes and activities on Monday, Feb. 23, due to historic blizzard conditions from Winter Storm Hernando, according to a message from New School Alerts at 1:29 p.m. on Feb. 22.
New York City is expected to get 16 to 24 inches of snow starting Sunday and continuing throughout Monday. This is the first blizzard warning issued for the city by the National Weather Service since 2017, according to the National Weather Service.
A blizzard is more intense than a winter storm, according to the National Weather Service, and causes dangerous conditions including heavy snow, high winds, and whiteouts.
According to the message, administrative offices will be closed except for those “essential to the continued and safe operation of the campus.”
“Dining services will operate on a modified schedule starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, but all classrooms, labs, workshops, libraries, and Student Health Services will be closed,” the email said.
Residence Halls will stay open. The University Center will be open from 7:30 a.m. to midnight on Monday for anyone seeking refuge from the storm.
The email said that TNS faculty should plan to assign asynchronous work or designated makeup classes to account for Monday cancellations.
The alert said The New School anticipates returning to regular hours on Feb. 24, but students and teachers should monitor the “New School status page and Instagram account for the most current information.”
“I am asking all New Yorkers to stay inside and stay off the roads for your safety. These have the potential to be even more hazardous conditions than we faced in the last storm,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a weather update press conference on Feb. 21.
The MTA said, “Customers are strongly advised to avoid travel.”
“Please be safe and, if possible, stay indoors,” the alert said.
