A group of individuals spray painted over former New School President Bob Kerrey’s last name outside Kerrey Hall last night, protesting his connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The group also left an open letter to university administrators to take Kerrey’s name off of the dorm.
This was the third incident in the last several months following the discovery by the New School Free Press that Kerrey exchanged emails with Epstein and arranged to meet with him at least five times throughout 2013 and 2014.
At 10 p.m. on April 15, a group of individuals — the same group behind the prior graffiti — returned to Kerrey Hall, according to a person claiming responsibility for the graffiti, who confirmed it was the same group. The group crossed out Kerrey’s name at the building’s entrance, according to video footage.
The school has since removed the spray paint.
“The university recognizes that there have been concerns expressed regarding the naming of Kerrey Hall. While there is no plan to revisit the building’s name, we remain open to hearing concerns and discussing issues,” Merrie Snead, associate director of university communications, said in a statement in response to the graffiti.
The New School Free Press received a video showing an individual crossing out Kerrey’s name as well as a photo of a letter that was taped to the wall, similar to the previous two incidents.
The letter contained the same demands as the previous two: that the University remove Kerrey’s name from the building and take accountability for his connection to Epstein. The letter also mentioned that Epstein financed the education of two students at The New School, whom he was exploiting.
“All we ask is that you remove his name and take accountability,” the letter said.
The letter featured a question in italics at the bottom.
“Is that too much to ask?” the letter said.

In February, NSFP found that Kerrey exchanged emails with Epstein and arranged to meet with him at least five times throughout 2013 and 2014, following the U.S. Department of Justice’s release of the Epstein files.
The documents also showed that Kerrey continued a relationship after Epstein was found guilty and convicted of being a sex offender in 2008.
In response, Kerrey said that he assumed Epstein had “paid a price” for the offenses in Florida. Kerrey also told NSFP that he only remembered meeting with Epstein once.
“That’s not a good excuse, but it’s the only excuse I’ve got,” Kerrey said.
The first graffiti appeared on Feb. 10 when “Epstein Hall” was spray-painted on the sidewalk directly in front of the dorm building.
For the second act, on Feb. 17, the group used a red marker to cross out “Kerrey” printed on the side of the building. Epstein’s name was then written below alongside taped printouts of email exchanges between Epstein and Kerrey.
The University Student Senate has voted to recommend renaming Kerrey Hall, but the decision is ultimately the university’s.
