The New School is raising tuition by 3.5% for the 2026-27 academic year, according to a university-wide email sent on March 26. The increase will impact all undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The announcement marks the fifth straight year of tuition raises since 2022, as the university manages rising operating costs. It’s also to help with a years-long deficit that’s now at least $48 million, according to administrators in November.

Tuition costs at universities across the country are rising in response to inflation and have done so for decades, according to NPR. New York University (NYU), in one instance, announced a 4.25% tuition increase for the 2025-26 school year.

Next fall, tuition per semester at TNS — not including room and board — for new undergraduate students will cost $31,174. Tuition per semester for continuing undergraduate students will cost $30,125 for those at Lang and CoPA and $31,174 for those at Parsons.

This academic year, tuition per semester for new undergraduate students at Parsons, Lang, and CoPA costs $30,120. Tuition per semester for continuing undergraduate students costs $29,106 for those at Lang and CoPA and $30,120 for those at Parsons.

Graduate students will see similar increases. Costs for graduate programs vary, depending on the college and program, and can be viewed at the university’s website.

The university will provide $1.5 million in additional financial aid to eligible Pell Grant students to help with the increase, according to the email.

95% of incoming undergraduate students receive financial aid from the university, but the support covers less than half of the average annual tuition, according to the Fall 2025 New Students’ IR Digest.

Students have long said they have difficulties affording the university. The total cost of attendance, with room and board, nears $100,000 a year — among the highest in the country.
