The New School is raising tuition by 4.3% for incoming and current students who enrolled in the university after the 2022 Part-Time Faculty strike. The raise will take effect at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.

According to a university email announcement, the purpose of the tuition increase is to maintain the quality of their academic and co-curricular services. Most of the school’s funding comes from tuition, room and board, and fees. The email also announced that housing costs will be “significantly reduced,” but did not state an exact amount.

Currently, it costs around $28,000 for a semester of tuition at The New School, according to The New School’s Tuition and Fees page. With this raise, tuition would increase by over $2,000 a year. Over the past five years, the university’s tuition and fees has grown by a rate of 2.29% annually.

Just last spring, the university applied a 3.5% tuition increase for all incoming students for the 2023-24 academic year, but not for students enrolled throughout the Part-Time Faculty strike.

Students enrolled in the university during the fall 2022 Part-Time Faculty Strike will receive a similar offset grant as the one implemented last year. The grant will essentially pay the cost of the tuition raise, leaving students’ tuition unscathed for the 2024-2025 academic year. This offset grant will be shown in students’ accounts as a tuition discount, and students will not need to apply for it.

According to the university, they will fund and aid incoming students on a need basis and will provide enhanced financial support for continuing students whom the tuition raise will affect.
