10 Amazing Classes That Will Help You Fill Your Schedule Up Next Semester

The dreaded registration season is upon New Schoolers once again, but don’t freak out. We’re here to help. From a grad. school class on social media to a DJ course at Lang, here are some interesting classes you can take for next semester.

  1. DJ Skills & Styles – 2 credits

Every Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 5:15 p.m. or 6 to 7:15 p.m.

Learn basic DJ skills from mix master DJ Rob Swift while earning college credits. This Lang class’ course description says that it will provide you with a foundation of basic fundamentals such as mixing, scratching, and operating a turn table. However, don’t be fooled, dedication is a must for this course. If enrolled in this class, one must also sign up for another course called DJ Skills Practice Session, which is offered on Thursdays from 4-5:15 PM or 6-7:15 PM.

  1.   NYC: Zine Culture- 3 credits

         Every Tuesday from  12:10-2:50PM

Need we say more? This Parsons class is supposed to teach you about zines, make you read zines, and even give you a chance to make your own zine for your final project. Jealous? Don’t worry, the course is open to non-Parsons’ students too.

  1.  New York Dance in the Eighties- 4 credits

        Every Monday and Wednesday from 1:50-3:30PM

From Hip Hop to Voguing, this course is said to give you an understanding of not only the different dance scenes in NYC, but the relationship between art and crises, specifically AIDS and the relationship it has with queer performance communities. The class sounds perfect for those looking for a fun way to fulfil a Liberal Arts credit. Leg warmers and leotards optional.

  1. Film Scoring 1- 2 credits

         Every  Friday from 10-11:50AM

Have you dreamt of composing scores for film? Well now is your chance! The Jazz School’s Film Scoring 1 is mapped out so that you will get the experience you need by composing music, or pre-existing music for clips from feature films. The only requirement is that you must have experience in an audio editing software such as GarageBand or Pro Tools in order to enroll in the class.

  1. The Nude: History & Theory- 3 credits

    Every Wednesday from 3:50-6:30PM

This eyebrow-raising course is all about art that portrays the nude. Throughout the semester in this Parsons class, you’ll likely be will exploring paintings and sculptures of the nude by artists such as Michelangelo and Picasso, as well as discussing the influence that popular culture has on ideal body image.

  1.  Global Soccer, Global Politics- 3 Credits

      Every Thursday from 6-7:50PM

If you’re someone that eats, sleeps, and breathes soccer, this course might just be for you. In this Public Engagement class you’ll be investigating the effect soccer has had between global political, cultural and economic power relations around the world. This seminar will also discuss the sport in film and literature, as well.

  1. JPER 4520 Brazilian Drum Workshop- 2 credits

      Every  Friday from  2-3:50PM

Explore the overlooked Brazilian music genre of Maracatu, a rhythmic music style of northeast Brazil. Along with Maracatu, students will learn to sing in Portuguese and perform complex percussion arrangements. This Jazz drum workshop class is not only supposed to help you improve your drumming skills, but also immerse you in Brazilian culture.


  1. The Business of Hollywood- 0 to 3 credits

      Online

Don’t have time to be in class, but crave some unusual learning? This Public Engagement course is structured as a role playing course that allows one to conduct deal making in a Hollywood-industry setting. The class will instill important business knowledge from this unique experience for those interested a pursuing a career in the film industry.

  1. Italian Diction 1A- 1 credits

   Every Thursday from  4:05-5:45PM

Want to sing in Italian, but don’t know where to start? From phonetics to articulation, this Mannes course is built to help you understand the pronunciation of Italian in song. However, you must be a voice major to enroll. And no, your shower singing probably won’t help you qualify.

  1. Business Strategies for Social Media- 3 credits

     Every Wednesday from 4-5:50PM

Only in 2016 would there be a grad student class about social media. This Media Studies course is where you’ll be able to investigate the impact and success of social media strategies. Increase of followers not guaranteed.
