Free Press Live: Flickadecoco, Episode 3

“It makes you want to flick the fro-yo,” said Hattie Simon, vocalist of the band Flickadecoco, when asked to define its sound.

Flickadecoco is the New School band that’s been featured in the Free Press Live’s first 360 video, and its third episode.

Even though the band doesn’t yet have a website or official band pictures, it has already performed in various venues including the legendary Rockwood Music Hall stage. That’s more than most college bands can claim.

As for its members, all of them are students in The New School for Performing Arts’ Jazz division.

John Koozin is on the bass, Jack Gruber plays keyboard, Misia Vessio hits the drums, Billy Duffy’s on the trombone and Daveer Mohan blows the saxophone.

Koozin described the group’s music a mix of  “Soul, neo-soul, jazz-y, super relatable, fun, feel-good, sexy, loving music that hopefully sounds good and makes everyone feel good and make love and buy our records.”

If the Fall semester was all about writing and getting the members right, this summer is the time for “getting out there and doing the next wave of shows, and more recording,” said Koozin.

The band began with four members and, though some have come and gone, it has now made its way to a steady six. Steady enough for Koozin to state: “We’ve switched out and added and had some love and hate, but this is Flickadecoco.”
