Looking for something fun to do? Here are eight events that we think are worth checking out. From a Burlesque show in Brooklyn to a New School basketball game, this is what’s happening this week:

February 4

Feminism for the 99% and the New Feminist Wave

Time: 7:30-8:55 p.m.

Location: Wolff Conference Room, Room D1103, Albert and Vera List Academic Center

Cost: Free

A discussion of the new wave of feminism ahead of of the transnational feminist strike that will take place on March 8th across the world. Panelists include Ximena Bustamante, Julia Cámara, Cinzia Arruzza, Tithi Bhattacharya, among others.

Mannes Orchestra: Student Conductors present Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff

Time: 7:30-8:55 p.m.

Location: John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center 65 Fifth Ave., Room U100

Fee: Free and open to the public

New York Times-acclaimed Mannes Orchestra conducts a graduate student-led performance of the works of Verdi, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

New York Times at The New School: Civilian Casualties of the War on Terror

Time: 7 p.m. (Doors open @ 7:30 p.m.)

Location: John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center 65 Fifth Ave., Room U100

Fee: Free for New School students, Registration required.

This lecture features a group of experts on the human costs of war in a discussion about the global war on terror. The panel will include C. J. Chivers, Alissa J. Rubin, Azmat Khan, and Brian Costner.

Race, Sex & Cinema: The World of Marlon Riggs

Time: Varies by day

Location: BAM Rose Cinemas 30 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn, NY

Fee: $15 (per film screening)

The American filmmaker and gay rights activist Marlon Riggs created works that explored the intersection of race, gender, and sexual identity within American culture. Race, Sex & Cinema: The World of Marlon Riggs features a collection of Riggs’ most prominent films, including Tongues United, Ethnic Notions, Color Adjustment, and Black Is… Black Ain’t, in memory of the 25th anniversary of his death.

Magical Girl Burlesque presents The New Review

Time: 8 p.m.-10 p.m. (Doors open at 7:30 p.m.)

Location: 176 St. Nicholas Ave., 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, NY

Fee: $5 cash or card

Organized by Mayday Space, The New Review is a bi-monthly show where experienced and beginner burlesquers get to perform their craft. Featured performances include: Bowery Bombshell, Lucy Risquè, Foxy Belle Afriq, and many more.

Urban Bush Women: Hair & Other Stories

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: BRIC House 647 Fulton St., Brooklyn, NY

Fee: $20 in advance, $25 on day-of-show

Hair & Other Stories is a collection of personal narratives that explores the path of freedom and self-love. Choreographed by Chanon Judson and Samantha Speis, the performance examines  beauty, identity and race and questions perceived American “values” through African-American women’s hair.

Sigrid Nunez presents “The Friend”

Sigrid Nunez, a professor at the Schools of Public Engagement and winner of the National Book Award, will be presenting her new novel, “The Friend.” The novel tells the story of companionship between a dog and a woman in the aftermath of grief.
