Stuy Dorm Residents Wake Up To Smoke From Fire Nextdoor

Students living in Stuyvesant Residence Hall woke up to the smell of smoke Wednesday morning after a neighboring building caught fire.

My roommate smelled smoke around 4 a.m. and kept hearing a bunch of sirens and strange noises,” said Kathryn Burress, a resident of Stuy. “We looked out our window and the building was smoking and there were a bunch of firemen with lights on the roof of the building.”

Within seconds after looking out her window, Burress noticed a fire consuming parts of 313 E. 14th St.

Another student who lives in the dorm, Liam Gavin, said he heard an abundance of ambulance sirens as well as the sound of people crying in the residence hall.

The FDNY was first notified of the incident at 4:38 a.m., department officials said. First responders arrived on scene within about 2 minutes after receiving the call.

The fire lasted about 40 minutes and was “under control” by 5:16 a.m., according to a tweet posted by the fire department. Approximately 12 firetrucks with 60 firefighters responded to the scene, officials said.

No injuries were reported.
