The New School will cut 16 minors next fall

16 minors at The New School, predominantly at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, will be cut next fall, according to a document obtained by The New School Free Press and confirmation from university communications. Four of the minors are language programs at Lang.

The minors were previously unreported and not included in a faculty-wide Nov. 25 email from the provost’s office announcing cuts and pauses for 23 academic programs next fall.

Students who have already declared one of the impacted minors will be able to finish through a “teach out plan” by the university, according to a faculty member who was granted anonymity in order to discuss private meetings and amidst ongoing efforts by the university to reduce faculty.

“Minors selected for discontinuance will not be available for students to declare beginning in Fall 2026,” Merrie Snead, associate director of university communications, said in an email.

“Separate from the formal program actions, minors are also being assessed as part of the university’s curriculum management process,” Snead said. “While this work is underway, students will be able to declare minors in areas that are impacted by the assessment through the Spring 2026 semester.”

The cuts come as the university undertakes a sweeping restructuring effort to stabilize its growing financial deficit, last estimated by administrators to be $48 million. The process has received media attention in recent months and escalating condemnation from faculty and students who call it rushed and opaque.

The full list of the minors, according to the document and university communications, that will not be available to undeclared students next fall is as follows:
