Snowed in? Here’s what to binge-watch

New York City has been blanketed in snow, and The New School has the day off. You could get a head start on coursework, or make the trek to Central Park to try your hand at sledding … Or you could stay inside and get cozy! To help you make the most of the day, the New School Free Press editorial staff has rounded up our favourite movies and TV shows for the perfect snow day watch.

Industry (2020-present)

Following the personal and professional lives of young grads climbing through the ranks at a London investment bank, this HBO show — currently on air for season 4 (every Sunday!) — hits every stride of the machinations and ruminations of what it’s like to work in a cutthroat world of high finance. Shrewdly blending corporate culture, ambition, and unsettling humor, Industry explores how these institutional systems fuse into our day-to-day lives. Banking on the old adage to “follow the money …” — for fans of Succession, Euphoria, and Severance, this is a perfect watch for you.

Cocaine Bear (2023)

This film is the perfect choice for a snow day. The acting is Oscar-worthy, the writing is Pulitzer-worthy, and the plot is Nobel-worthy. The film follows the 500-pound titular character as he embarks on a murderous rampage throughout Georgia’s Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest, fending off police, wildlife activists, criminals, paramedics, fixers, and little children. I was on the bear’s side. It’s a good film for group viewing, as it’s sure to please both the pro-animal and pro-drug crowds. And it’s based on a true story.

Lockwood & Co. (2023)

Based on Jonathan Stroud’s bestselling Lockwood & Co. books, this Netflix adaptation chronicles the unlikely rise of a ghost hunting agency run by three teenagers as paranormal activity upends the United Kingdom. It’s frightfully fun, with a killer soundtrack and an incredibly talented cast of young Brits. Like all the best Netflix shows, it was cancelled after one season, but you can keep the hunt going by reading The Hollow Boy.

Heated Rivalry (2025)

Hockey is a cold-weather sport! Canada is a cold place! All signs point to Heated Rivalry as the perfect snow day watch. It’s the show everyone’s talking about — even the mayor! You’ve got the choice of reading or watching (or both). The New York Public Library is offering free, zero-wait downloads of Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry series now through February 14th. The six-episode, bingeable show is streaming on HBO. The books are pretty bad, and the show is pretty good. Pick your poison!

Nathan For You (2013-2017)

Sitting somewhere between a reality TV show and an experiment conducted by an alien, Nathan For You (streaming on HBO) follows Canadian comedian and business school graduate Nathan Fielder as he attempts to rescue struggling businesses with some … outside the box thinking. It’s funny, awkward, and surprisingly heartfelt for a TV show seemingly designed around psychologically torturing small business owners. If you cringe easily, Nathan may not be For You, but stick it out and you’ll be rolling on the floor laughing harder than you thought possible.

I Love LA (2025)

When classes on the east coast are cancelled and the sun is nowhere to be seen, I Love LA steps in as climate control. Created by east-coaster Rachel Sennott, the show follows a group of sun-drenched young Angelenos as they navigate new ways to reclaim their friendship after years of distance. This is a show that is aware of just how unserious its characters are — both mocking as well as celebrating them for it. Following in the footsteps of Issa Rae and Lena Dunham, Sennott cements a genre where insufferable main characters stay unapologetically insufferable, and somehow get rewarded with prestige television. Lucky for her, this is exactly what I, along with 1.4 million other people, was looking for.
