Fashion on 5th: Hot N Cold

Published

We’ve got two servings of Fashion on 5th, our fashion column showcasing student’s best and most unique looks.

Jan. 25

New Schoolers kept personal pieces close in the bitter cold. From statement outerwear to delicate jewelry, students went back to school with gifts from friends new and old. With looks like these, this fashion column belongs above the fold. As always, Fashion on Fifth Avenue was bold.

Vanessa Aguasvivas (@vanessaaguasvivas), an undeclared freshman at Lang, wore a blue fur-trimmed coat gifted by a long-time friend while he was cutting her hair. “First day wearing it, actually,” Aguasvivas said. The jeans, formerly her roommate’s, were paired with a skull belt gifted by her father’s girlfriend. She wore her Doc Martens with socks her mother gave her for Christmas. The monochrome extended to Aguasvivas’ makeup. “I resonate deeply with blue,” Aguasvivas said. “I almost see it as my aura color.”

Left: Natalie Mlikota (@whosacherry), an undeclared freshman at Lang, and Right: Michael Cuervo (@michaelcuervoh), a freshman studying screen studies at Lang, were on their way to lunch. They wore matching necklaces, made by Mlikota’s roommate’s sister-in-law. “Four of us have the same necklace. Wait, that makes it sound like a cult,” she said.

Mlikota layered a coat from London over her Pria sweater. Her black backpack was from Argentina. When asked about the gem in the necklace, Mlikota said, “It’s a… quartzo? How do you say it? … It’s a quartz?” Her other necklace was from a museum in Los Angeles.

Cuervo’s shirt and coat were from H&M. The pants and shoes were from Forever 21. When asked why he put this outfit together today, he said, “To be completely honest, I left all of my pants back in Miami.” Cuervo finished the look off with a hat, as he didn’t do his hair that morning.

Veronica Lee (@veronicahlee), a junior studying fashion design at Parsons, flaunted an entirely thrifted cold weather look, with several pieces found in the children’s section. The leopard print coat layered underneath a leather jacket was “a little girl’s coat.” The t-shirt was a toddler sized 5T. Lee snagged the corduroys for 30 cents, at a store going out of business. The bandana was from Reminiscence. Up until last week, Lee’s hair was her natural black. “I bleached my whole head,” she said. “I don’t usually dye my hair.”

Feb. 21

In February, the weather unexpectedly heated up. With classmates in these digs, getting dressed can be tough. Here’s our latest fashion coverage… but it’s never enough.

Armando Dollero (@dollearm), a junior studying philosophy at Lang, loved the warmth and sunlight. “Adore it. Great. Gonna go to the park and get my tan on.” As he was being photographed, Marie Mannix, a friend of his studying fashion design at Parsons, spotted him and yelled, “Holy shit, is it summer?” Dollero’s graphic t-shirt was purchased in L.A., and paired with pink floral shorts from Zara. “These are pretty much the only pink things I own. I mostly wear neutrals and black,” Dollero said. “But when it’s sunny, I get cheerful.”

Left: Ella Snyder (@ellasnyder) and Right: Morganne Boulden (@asthma_god), both freshmen studying photography at Parsons, had just stepped out of class in their Doc Martens and into the unseasonably nice weather.

Snyder’s silver A-line skirt, which she wore over sheer black tights, was purchased from LF. Despite the warmth, she wore her black Docs. “They’re my favorite shoes. They don’t make them anymore,” she said. “They make my feet look really big, but I don’t care.” Snyder’s printed tee shirt was thrifted in Nashville, Tennessee. The origins of her jacket were somewhat murky. “Someone left it in my dorm and I’ve just kind of acquired it.”

Boulden bought her entire summer look on Depop. She wore a green-and-white striped shirt with a white prairie skirt and finished her look off with a pair of Doc Martens. Boulden accessorized with a black Vans backpack and a personalized water bottle covered in stickers, including a Princess Nokia sticker. “She threw the soup at that guy on the subway.”

Left: Eleanor Amicucci (@notnoteleanor) Right: Isabelle Bergman are roommates living together at Kerrey Hall. They’re aware of how their eye-catching hair looks together. “Our friend told us we look like Cosmo and Wanda,” Bergman said, referencing characters from The Fairly OddParents.

Amicucci, a junior studying culture and media at Lang, popped with her pink hair. Her tank top was from Brandy Melville (“So embarrassing,” she added.) and her black straight-leg jeans were from Urban Outfitters. She also wore Doc Martens and accessorized with a Diesel bag.

Bergman , a transfer BA/BFA student studying psychology at Lang and illustration at Parsons, styled a black-and-white American Apparel romper with bursts of colors, including her emerald colored hair. “I do different colors. It’s my first time being this green,” Bergman said.  She wore a Uniqlo jacket covered in Keith Haring’s art, from the company’s partnership with MoMA. Her own Keith Haring tattoo came out in the warmth. “He’s a big influence. I love him. He’s great,” she said.
