An Apology to Our Readers

Published

To our readers,

Last semester, the New School Free Press published a story without crediting its correct authors.

The story was originally reported and written for a Journalism + Design seminar. It was printed in our special issue “No Place Like Home” in December 2016.

The person responsible for the plagiarism was removed from the Free Press when editors learned what happened.

We sincerely apologize to the students whose work was plagiarized, Luna Olavarria Gallegos and Charles Innis. Their work, which included interviews with a range of students, experts and administrators, highlighted issues of housing instability among students, including how struggling students sometimes sleep in The New School’s University Center as way to manage high costs at an expensive institution in an expensive city.

We also apologize to our readers.

Our aim is to serve the entire New School readership and to be a trusted outlet for information about issues that affect our community.  Free Press reporters and editors have tried to provide The New School community with an unvarnished account about what is happening at the university since the Free Press was founded in 2007. We have done so by adhering to a rigorous editorial process. But we failed to do so in this case, and we are sorry. We are examining our processes and we are committed to serving and building the relationship with our readers.

We’ll keep working and we hope you’ll keep reading. If you have questions or comments, we are listening. Please email us: nsfreepress@gmail.com.

Thank you,

The New School Free Press editorial board
