Free Press Live: Jo-B, Ruby, And Wit, Episode 6

Published

On the sixth episode of “Free Press Live”, Jo-B Sebastian, Ruby Greenberg, and Prawit Siriwat perform an awe-inspiring cover of Distance” by Emily King and “Tears Dry On Their Own” by Amy Winehouse.

Greenberg, a BA/BFA Jazz Studies senior with a concentration on vocals and sociology, first met Sebastian, who is also a Jazz Studies senior concentrating on vocals, in the spring of 2014 through their vocal teacher, Kate Baker. Since then, they have bonded over their ability to fuse their styles of R&B, jazz, and folk to create their own versions of songs.

Sebastian says that their ultimate goal in collaborating is to “showcase each others diversity and talents without taking anything away from each other. Sebastian, Greenberg, and Siriwat all want to find a middle-ground, and to bring their own soul to it.” In fact, they work so well together that they will be performing in each other’s senior showcases. Sebastian, graduating this semester, will have his showcase December 18th in the performance hall of Arnold Hall.

In this episode, they are joined by Siriwat, New School Jazz Studies alumni of 2014. He was also introduced to Greenberg and Sebastian through their vocal teacher, Kate. He plays a variety of instruments with fluidity among a wide range of styles and genres.  Inspired by Steven Wilson, Jim Hall, progressive rock, metal and classical music, Siriwat says he has been described as a combination of Stravinsky and Hendrix.

As a whole, the three find the golden mean between talent, hard work, flexibility, and chemistry to create surprising yet entrancing music covers. At the start of the new year, you can look for new music by them on their Soundcloud pages, which are listed below.
