MUSIC

NAKAYA @ CMJ Music Festival

Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Hold hands with the people around you and sway peacefully in a crowd with NAKAYA, a New York based singer-songwriter. Let her therapeutically ambient voice rush over you, as one small tear drips from your eye and finally you feel happiness after months of weakness. This event is part of a festival called the CMJ Music Marathon happening all throughout this week it’s 21+ and tickets are $20. The lineup is filled with tons of cool musicians, conferences, networking events and speakers all around New York so be sure to check it out!

TAPES

Cassette Store Day Tape Meet

Oct. 17 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The End Records is having a flea market sale to celebrate the third annual Cassette Store Day. If you’re a hipster-ass cassette lover, collect all your cassettes, put them in your obscure tote bag and lug them to Brooklyn where you can shamelessly brag with others of your kind. Not only is this a rooftop event (yay rooftops!) but they also have a great lineup of cassette only DJs (yay DJs!). Palisades will be hosting the after party.

BEATS

Women Beatmaker’s Conference

Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

I know you’re sick of talking to that dude, you know the one. He’s somehow at every party, sharing his newest “beats” that you have to pretend don’t sound like the last three beats you heard from the last three parties you were at. Take my advice and unfollow that dude, that I know you drunkenly agreed to follow on Soundcloud and walk yourself to this event. You’ll be able to hear some legitimate beats from the obviously superior female DJs who are going to be at this conference sharing support, suggestions and an overall safe place with each other!

HOW TO

Projection Mapping with Kyle Li

Oct. 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There is no doubt that the skills you will learn in this class will improve your parties, concerts, love life and overall happiness. You can bring your own images or GIFs and learn how to turn them into projections that can be placed onto various environmental settings such as walls, bodies, boxes, bags, tables, etc. I mean, just think of the possibilities. This is the future and were living it!

ART

Greater New York

Now through March 7th, with special performance art throughout.

This is MoMA PS1’s fourth “Greater New York” exhibit. It aims to collect all the emerging artists who are currently living and working in New York. Basically, these are the coolest people in New York right now, and if you want a chance for a little bit of them to rub off onto your simpleton self go stare at a painting for a couple hours. This week, on Thursday and Friday, there will performances by Jen Rosenblit.

Through Nov. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The New York Botanical Garden is honoring Frida Kahlo by exhibiting Kahlo’s appreciation of mother nature. Visitors will be able to learn about Kahlo’s life and passions through her personal work and a representation of the garden she took care of at her home in Mexico City. COMEDY

Maude Night

Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m.

This is my top Tinder/OKCupid/Grindr date suggestion for the week. UCB’s “Maude Night” will make the most stoic of people succumb to a smile. This night focuses on sketch comedy, with some of the best comedians in NYC right now. Only $5 AND they sell $5 tallboys, a sure fire when it comes to impressing your date.
