Looking Back, Moving Forward

As our leadership transitions to a new Editorial Board with the coming semester, the Free Press bids farewell to a team of outstanding journalists who have helped transform this student-run newspaper into an indelible establishment at The New School.

For seven years now, the Free Press has strived to serve the university community as a driver of discourse, a vigilant eye for transparency and a facilitator of public engagement. Throughout this time, the Free Press has been continually evolving — from a 12-page bi-weekly publication to a monthly magazine with a daily online presence on our website and in social media.

We aim to truthfully cover the most pressing issues in the university, Greenwich Village, New York City and the world, through critical reporting that is in service of our public from exploring faculty satisfaction to uncovering exorbitant salaries of administrators. The move to a monthly print publication has afforded us the timely ability to delve deep into these issues.

Over the past year, we have begun utilizing the web and social networks to extend the conversation, but we recognize that there is room for improvement. Our online material should not only be a reproduction of our print material, but must utilize the creativity and fast-paced reporting supported by the internet, up-to-speed with other similar-sized publications and complemented by a steadily-improving print issue that digs deep into important matters at the university.

In the coming months, we will begin implementing a new strategy to reach out to our readership by enhancing our social media presence and positioning new outlets for interpersonal interactions, such as a new approach to how we test the pulse of the university and hear what our readers have to say — be on the lookout.

We would like to thank our editors for paving the trail that we’re getting ready to blaze down: Editor in Chief Danielle Balbi, Managing Print Editor Michele Berry, News Editor Michael Kaplan, Arts & Culture Editor Niko Nelson, Arts & Culture Deputy Alina Ramirez, Opinions Deputy John Hyslop and Photo Editor Ivy Meissner, it has been a privilege working with all of you.
